At Summit, we’re all about raising your expectations, and we know you’ll love your new home with us—but first thing’s first, you have to move in! Moving is often cited as one of life’s most stressful events, but you can greatly reduce your workload and make life easier by ensuring you are properly organized ahead of time and have a plan in place for moving day.

Gather Supplies

Having the right supplies will save you a lot of headache later on. Keep in mind that you don’t necessarily need to buy all these materials; there are plenty of stores with empty boxes they’re eager to get rid of. Have these items handy:

  • Packing tape
  • Wrapping paper, bubble wrap, shrink wrap
  • Basic tools (hammers, screwdrivers, etc.)
  • Trash bags
  • Furniture covers
  • Utility knives
  • Hand trucks or dollies

Pack Smart

Packing your belongings in a logical way eases the stress of figuring out where everything is and where it needs to go. Ensure that similar items are grouped together like kitchen or bathroom necessities. Start by packing up your least essential items first, such as items that are in storage, artwork, books, and anything else that you don’t need every day. Label your moving boxes by room and write your labels on opposite sides, as well as the top, so that no matter what side is facing outward, you can clearly read its label.

Clear Out the Clutter

Over the years, we all accumulate things that, for whatever reason, we just don’t need anymore. Moving is a great opportunity to clean house. If you’re having trouble deciding what to get rid of, consider when you last used the item. If it was more than two years ago, it’s likely you won’t use it again. Finally, sort everything into three categories: trash, donate, and sell. This way, you’ll get the most out of clearing out your closet.

Organize Moving Day

The boxes that contain your least-used items should be the last ones loaded into the truck. If that seems counterintuitive, consider that these boxes will be unloaded first, and thus buried under boxes of more essential items, which you’ll then be able to unpack first.

Ask for Help

Moving is a tough job, and whether you solicit the help of family and friends or hire professional movers, getting help with your move is a must to ensure a smooth transition. Don’t be afraid to ask for a helping hand to help with your big move.
